What to focus on
- P. falciparum vs the non-falciparum species (vivax, ovale, malariae, knowlesi) and why falciparum is the killer
- Diagnosis: thick and thin films plus rapid diagnostic tests; a single negative film does not exclude it — repeat over 48–72 hours
- Features of severe/complicated malaria (impaired consciousness, acidosis, hypoglycaemia, high parasitaemia, renal impairment)
- Principle that falciparum from endemic areas is treated as chloroquine-resistant; artemisinin-based therapy is first line
- Prevention: the ABCD of malaria (Awareness, Bite avoidance, Chemoprophylaxis, prompt Diagnosis)
You don’t need
Exact hospital dosing regimens or the detail of parenteral artesunate protocols.
